Rochdale Training Learner Awards 2025

The team at Rochdale Training has recently celebrated the achievements of their learners at a grand event at Rochdale Town Hall.

 

Chief Executive of Rochdale Training, Rachel Yates said “The evening was a fantastic celebration of achievement, determination and personal growth. We're incredibly proud of all our learners and everything they've accomplished. Here's to even more success ahead!

 

Apprentice of the Year Level 2

This category celebrates outstanding individuals who have achieved a level 2 apprenticeship. Nominated individuals have shown a great level of enthusiasm and commitment to their studies and role within their organisation.

Apprentice of the Year Level 2 - Richie Butterworth (Winner)

Richie Butterworth was named Rochdale Training's Apprentice of the Year Level 2 after an exceptional apprenticeship journey with Lee Spring Ltd. Throughout his apprenticeship, Richie consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to learning, always seeking to understand the engineering processes behind his work rather than simply completing tasks. His enthusiasm, dedication and drive for continuous improvement impressed both his employer and tutors, leading to his successful progression onto a Level 3 apprenticeship. Overwhelmed to receive the award, Richie said he "really wasn't expecting this tonight" and was "absolutely delighted" to be recognised. His achievement highlights the positive impact apprenticeships can have in developing skilled, motivated professionals for the future.

Apprentice of the Year Level 2 Niall Birkitt

Niall Birkitt was recognised as a finalist for Apprentice of the Year Level 2 following an outstanding apprenticeship journey with Exentec Hargreaves Ltd. Joining the business at just 18 years old, Niall quickly became a valued member of the team through his professionalism, determination and willingness to learn. His positive attitude and commitment to developing new skills earned him internal recognition from his employer for his hard work and contribution to the business. After successfully completing his Level 2 apprenticeship ahead of schedule, Niall has now progressed onto a Level 3 programme, continuing to build a successful career in engineering.

Apprentice of the Year Level 2 Mackenzie Moran

Mackenzie Moran was recognised as a finalist for Apprentice of the Year Level 2 after an inspiring apprenticeship journey with Super Stars Nursery. With no previous experience in childcare, Mackenzie quickly developed into a confident and capable practitioner through her dedication and passion for supporting children's development. Alongside her studies, she overcame significant personal challenges, including health issues and supporting her child through additional needs assessments, while continuing to produce high-quality work. Her resilience and commitment led to her achieving a distinction in her qualification and progressing onto a Level 3 Early Years Educator apprenticeship.

Apprentice of the Year Level 3 - Danielle Duffy (Winner)

Danielle Duffy was crowned Rochdale Training's Apprentice of the Year Level 3 following an exceptional Teaching Assistant apprenticeship at Lowerplace Primary School. Working across Reception, Year 6 and SEND provision, Danielle has become a valued member of the school community, building strong relationships with pupils and adapting her approach to support a wide range of learning needs. Her dedication, professionalism and positive attitude have helped children feel confident, safe and motivated in their education. Overwhelmed to receive the award, Danielle said she was "incredibly happy" and "proud" to be recognised, adding that the achievement meant the world to her and her family. Her journey is a fantastic example that learning and career progression can happen at any stage of life.

 

Apprentice of the Year Level 3 - Conor Weldon

Conor Weldon was recognised as a finalist for Apprentice of the Year Level 3 following an exceptional apprenticeship journey with Salt Separation Services Ltd. Achieving a Distinction in his Mechanical Fitter qualification, Conor has progressed from apprentice to a highly skilled engineering specialist, contributing to major projects supporting Royal Navy vessels, submarines and cruise ships. His commitment to continuous improvement has also led to innovative workplace improvements, including the introduction of a QR code reporting system to enhance workshop efficiency. Alongside his own success, Conor has supported younger apprentices and has now progressed onto a Higher National Certificate in Mechanical Engineering.

 

Apprentice of the Year Level 3 - Christine Curtis

Christine Curtis was recognised as a finalist for Apprentice of the Year Level 3 after an incredibly inspiring apprenticeship journey. While completing her Early Years Educator apprenticeship, Christine faced extraordinary personal challenges when her daughter suffered a brain aneurysm and required extensive hospital treatment. Despite spending long periods supporting her family, she remained dedicated to her studies, continuing to complete assignments to an exceptionally high standard without taking a break in learning. Her determination and resilience saw her successfully complete both her qualification and End Point Assessment, making her a truly deserving finalist.

Apprentice of the Year Level 4 - Hiral Patel (Winner)

Hiral Patel was named Rochdale Training's Apprentice of the Year Level 4+ after an exceptional apprenticeship journey with Hurstead House Residential Care Home. Originally joining the organisation with a background in finance, Hiral embraced a new career in adult social care and progressed to managing two residential care homes while achieving a Distinction in his Level 5 Leader in Adult Care Apprenticeship. His outstanding leadership has driven improvements across care planning, safeguarding, staff development and quality assurance, while creating a supportive environment for residents, families and colleagues alike. Hiral's achievement highlights the positive impact leadership apprenticeships can have in developing future leaders and improving the quality of care across the sector.

 

Apprentice of the Year Level 4 - Anila John Kollannur

Anila John Kollannur was recognised as a finalist for Apprentice of the Year Level 4+ following an exceptional career in adult social care. With more than 17 years of healthcare experience, Anila has progressed from Staff Nurse to Registered Manager, leading a team of over 45 employees while successfully completing her Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management in Adult Care. Her empathetic leadership has driven improvements in service quality, staff development and resident satisfaction, creating a positive environment for both colleagues and those in her care. Anila's journey demonstrates how investing in leadership development can deliver lasting benefits for individuals, organisations and the wider community.

 

Apprentice of the Year Level 4 - Lynne McDermott

Lynne McDermott was recognised as a finalist for Apprentice of the Year Level 4+ following an inspiring journey of leadership and career progression at The Willows Dementia Hub. Since joining in 2018 as a Night Care Support Worker, Lynne has progressed through several roles to become Residential Manager, where she now leads a specialist dementia service and manages a team of around 30 staff. While completing her Level 5 qualification, she overcame significant personal challenges without losing focus on delivering exceptional care and supporting her team. Lynne's resilience, compassion and dedication have made a lasting difference to both residents and colleagues.

 

 

 

Community Impact Award 

The Community Impact Award celebrates individuals or organisations that have made a meaningful difference to their local community through dedication, kindness and positive action. Whether through volunteering, supporting local initiatives or improving the lives of others, the award recognises those whose efforts have created a lasting impact and inspired those around them.

Hassan Jabbar was named Rochdale Training's Community Impact Award Winner 2026 in recognition of his exceptional commitment to supporting young people, championing equality and diversity, and creating positive change across his community. Alongside successfully completing his engineering apprenticeship with Renold Gears, Hassan has dedicated countless hours to youth leadership and volunteering. As Oldham Youth Mayor, and through his work with the Oldham Youth Cabinet, UK Youth Parliament and Rochdale Training's Equality and Diversity Steering Group, he has helped influence local decision-making, promote inclusion and encourage more young people to become active in their communities. Balancing these responsibilities alongside a demanding apprenticeship is a remarkable achievement, and his passion, leadership and dedication have made a lasting impact, inspiring the next generation of young leaders.

 

 

 

Higher National Learner of the Year

Higher National Learner of the Year - Danny Helme (Winner)

Danny Helme was named Rochdale Training's Higher National Learner of the Year in recognition of his exceptional commitment to professional development and lifelong learning. After successfully completing his apprenticeship, Danny continued to challenge himself by progressing onto Higher National qualifications while building a successful engineering career. When employer support for further study was unavailable, he made the bold decision to become self-employed so he could continue investing in his own development. His dedication, technical ability and strong work ethic have enabled him to balance work and study while contributing to major engineering projects. Surprised to receive the award, Danny said he was "very happy" and "extremely grateful" to everyone who voted for him. His journey is a fantastic example of how ambition and determination can drive continued success throughout a career.

 

Higher National Learner of the Year - Joshua Mitchell

Joshua Mitchell was recognised as a finalist for Higher National Learner of the Year following his outstanding commitment to professional development and engineering excellence. Having progressed from apprentice to Mechatronic Engineer at Farrel Ltd, Joshua has continued to enhance his skills through Higher National study while making a significant contribution to the business. His strong technical knowledge, problem-solving ability and commitment to continuous learning have supported innovation and operational improvements within the workplace. Alongside his own development, Joshua has become a valued mentor to new apprentices, encouraging others to grow and pursue further learning. His journey highlights how higher-level qualifications can develop future industry leaders and open up exciting career opportunities.

 

Higher National Learner of the Year - Jack Wynn

Jack Wynn was recognised as a finalist for Higher National Learner of the Year following his outstanding commitment to learning, innovation and professional development. Since progressing from apprentice to Research and Development Engineer at Farrel Ltd, Jack has continued to build his expertise through Higher National study, developing advanced technical skills while supporting innovation within the business. Balancing higher-level study alongside the demands of a busy engineering role, he has consistently applied new knowledge to real-world projects and is recognised by colleagues for his willingness to support others and share his expertise. Jack's dedication to continuous improvement highlights how Higher National qualifications can help learners progress into specialist technical careers while contributing to business growth.

 

 

 

 

Adult Learner of the Year

This category celebrates outstanding individuals who have achieved their qualification, funded by Adult Skills Funding via the team at Greater Manchester Combined Authority. Nominated individuals must have shown a great level of enthusiasm and commitment to their studies and where applicable, role within their organisation and/or progression to a higher-level qualification or role.

Adult Learner of the Year - Stephen Challinor (Winner)

Stephen Challinor was named Rochdale Training's Adult Learner of the Year in recognition of his commitment to professional development and lifelong learning. Already an experienced member of the team at Lift Safe Ltd, Stephen enrolled onto the Team Leader programme to strengthen his leadership, communication and people management skills in preparation for future career progression. By applying his new knowledge in the workplace, he quickly demonstrated the impact of his development and was promoted to Operations Manager, taking responsibility for running the company. Surprised to receive the award, Stephen said he was "quite surprised" and that the recognition meant a great deal to him. His journey is a fantastic example of how investing in personal development can open doors to new opportunities and career success.

Adult Learner of the Year - Stephanie Malthouse

Stephanie Malthouse was recognised as a finalist for Adult Learner of the Year following an inspiring journey of resilience and personal growth. Initially arriving at her Functional Skills Maths course feeling extremely nervous and unsure of her abilities, Stephanie overcame her fears through determination, hard work and a commitment to learning. As her confidence grew, she became increasingly independent, taking ownership of her studies and successfully achieving her qualification. Her journey is a powerful reminder that, with the right support and perseverance, barriers to learning can be overcome and it is never too late to achieve your goals.

 

Adult Learner of the Year - Chelsea Williamson

Chelsea Williamson was recognised as a finalist for Adult Learner of the Year following an inspiring journey of determination and resilience. Faced with the challenge of achieving both her English and Maths qualifications within a short timeframe to maintain her employment, Chelsea committed herself fully to her studies despite having been out of education for many years. She dedicated evenings, weekends and time at home to revision, remaining focused under significant pressure. Just two weeks before her deadline, Chelsea sat both exams on consecutive days and passed them first time. Her achievement is a powerful example of how hard work, perseverance and adult learning can transform futures.

Rising Star Award - Jon Smith (Winner)

Jon Smith was named Rochdale Training's Rising Star Award winner after an inspiring journey of personal growth, confidence and determination. When he first joined the Study Programme, Jon was quiet and lacked confidence, but through hard work and support he developed into a confident, capable young professional. After successfully completing his work placement, Jon volunteered at Rochdale Training, where his positive attitude and willingness to help others made him a valued member of the team before securing a Customer Service Apprenticeship. Overwhelmed to receive the award, Jon thanked his tutors, employer and everyone who had supported him, saying he "wouldn't be where I am today without them." His story is a powerful example of how confidence, opportunity and perseverance can transform lives.

 

Rising Star Award - Ebony Smith

Ebony Smith was recognised as a Rising Star finalist following an inspiring journey of resilience, determination and personal growth. Throughout her Study Programme, Ebony overcame both personal and academic challenges with a positive attitude and unwavering commitment to achieving her goals. Her determination, willingness to learn and support for those around her made her a role model for her peers. As a result of her hard work, Ebony secured a Level 2 Early Years Apprenticeship, where she continues to thrive and develop her skills. Her journey is a fantastic example of how perseverance and self-belief can help young people overcome challenges and achieve their ambitions.

 

Rising Star Award - Harvey Walsh

Harvey Walsh was recognised as a Rising Star finalist following an outstanding journey of ambition, professionalism and career progression. Beginning on Rochdale Training's Future Apprenticeship Foundation Programme, Harvey quickly impressed colleagues during his placement with Rochdale Borough Council through his initiative, strong work ethic and willingness to support others. He went on to secure a Level 3 Business Administrator Apprenticeship, where he developed practical resources to improve accessibility for residents and demonstrated excellent technical skills. Completing his apprenticeship ahead of schedule, Harvey has now secured a permanent role with Rochdale Borough Council. His journey highlights how determination and seizing opportunities can lead to long-term career success.

The Heywood Trailblazer Award recognises learners who have demonstrated determination, resilience and a commitment to creating positive change in their lives and communities.

Heywood Trailblazer Award - Silvanya Cassandra (Winner)

Silvanya Cassandra was recognised as a Trailblazer finalist following an inspiring journey of resilience, determination and personal growth. After first joining the New Pioneers Project as an unemployed single mother, Silvanya overcame significant challenges, including long-term health complications following the COVID-19 pandemic, and refused to give up on her ambitions. Re-engaging through the Trailblazer Programme, she rebuilt her confidence, achieved a Level 3 Information, Advice and Guidance qualification, volunteered within her local community and secured a role as a Career Broker with the New Pioneers Project. Today, she uses her own experiences to inspire and support others, proving that setbacks do not define your future and that resilience can create new opportunities.

 

Heywood Trailblazer Award - Maria Jabbar

Maria Jabbar was recognised as a Trailblazer finalist for her outstanding commitment to personal development and building a brighter future for herself and her family. Since joining the Heywood Trailblazer Programme, Maria has balanced childcare responsibilities while working towards her ambition of a career in education by completing a Level 2 Teaching Assistant qualification. Alongside her studies, she has taken part in wellbeing, budgeting and health initiatives to build her confidence and independence, and has secured valuable work experience within a local primary school. Maria's determination to continue progressing while supporting her family makes her a fantastic example of the Trailblazer spirit.

 

Heywood Trailblazer Award - Alisa Birch

Alisa Birch was recognised as a Trailblazer finalist for her commitment to learning, community involvement and supporting others. Since joining the Heywood Trailblazer Programme, Alisa has embraced every opportunity to develop her confidence and independence, achieving a Level 2 Customer Service qualification, completing a budgeting course and taking part in regular wellbeing activities. Alongside her own development, she has volunteered within the local community, supporting events and encouraging others to engage with the programme. Her positive attitude, dedication and willingness to help those around her make her an inspiring role model and a true example of the Trailblazer spirit.

Employer of the Year - Hurstead House Residential Care Home (Winner)

Hurstead House Residential Care Home was named Rochdale Training's Employer of the Year 2026 in recognition of its outstanding commitment to apprenticeships, workforce development and creating opportunities for staff to thrive. By embedding learning and professional development into the heart of the organisation, Hurstead House has created a culture where employees are supported to progress into leadership and management roles. Its investment in apprenticeships has strengthened succession planning, improved staff retention and enhanced the quality of care delivered to residents. The success of colleagues such as Hiral Patel and Uzma Ramzan reflects the organisation's belief that investing in people leads to better outcomes for staff, residents and the wider community.

A&F Sprinklers was recognised as a finalist for Employer of the Year in recognition of its continued commitment to developing skilled professionals through apprenticeships and workplace learning. Operating within a highly specialised industry, the company invests in its people by providing apprentices with valuable hands-on experience, structured training and ongoing mentoring. This dedication has helped learners develop technical expertise, confidence and long-term careers, while supporting the business in addressing industry skills shortages and building a strong workforce for the future.
