Looking to learn new skills and take your next step towards employment?

Our funded Short Courses are designed for adults aged 19+ who are unemployed and want to develop their skills, gain qualifications and improve their employment opportunities.

Choose from Teaching Assistant, Customer Service, MIG Welding and Digital Skills, with support and careers guidance available throughout your course.

Teaching Assistant Level 2

This Level 2 Award in Support Work in Schools is an Online Course designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge needed to work with children and young people in an educational environment. Topics include communication, child development, safeguarding, health and safety, and planning activities.

Throughout the course, you will build an understanding of how schools operate and gain the knowledge required to support teachers and pupils in both primary and secondary settings.

This qualification is a great first step towards a career as a Teaching Assistant or in a similar support role and can also help you progress onto higher-level qualifications. You will be guided throughout by a specialist tutor.

Duration: 5 weeks
Delivery: Online
Days: 3 days per week, 9:30am–2:30pm
Qualification: Level 2 Award in Support Work in Schools
Support: One-to-one tutor support and computer provided

Customer Service Level 2

This Level 2 Customer Service qualification combines customer care and professional development units to give you the skills needed to succeed in customer-facing roles. You will learn current industry practices, improve your practical customer service skills, and build your knowledge in key areas such as effective communication, handling customer enquiries, and developing positive customer relationships.

This training will be delivered in the heart of Bury and has been made possible through funding secured by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority to support Adult Education. The qualification is designed to help learners develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to work effectively in a variety of customer service environments.

Level: Level 2
Duration: 6 weeks
Delivery: Classroom-based at Rochdale Training
Days: 3 days per week, 9:30am–2:30pm
Support: One-to-one tutor support and careers guidance

Level 2 MIG Welding

This Level 2 MIG Welding Course is designed for individuals looking to pursue a career in the welding industry and gain a head start towards employment. Delivered by industry-experienced tutors, this fast-track programme provides practical, hands-on training and the opportunity to develop new or existing skills.

The course focuses on the Semi-Automatic welding process, one of the most widely used and easiest welding techniques to learn within the industry. You will also be taught how to carry out both destructive and non-destructive testing methods, including dye penetrant testing and nick break testing to assess weld quality and fusion.

By the end of the course, you will have developed valuable industry skills and experience to support your progression into employment or further training in the welding sector.

Delivery: In our engineering workshop
Days: 3 days per week, 9:30am–2:30pm
Qualification: Level 2 Award in Welding (Units)
Support: One-to-one tutor support and careers guidance

Digital Skills

This qualification is designed to help you build essential digital literacy skills and demonstrate your ability to use technology confidently in both everyday life and the workplace. It’s ideal for those who are new to digital tools or looking to strengthen their existing knowledge, providing a strong foundation for roles where digital skills are essential.

Throughout the course, you’ll learn how to find and use information effectively, keep data and devices safe, communicate and collaborate online, create and edit documents, and use a computer with confidence. By the end, you’ll have the practical skills and understanding needed to progress into a role that requires digital literacy or to take your learning to the next level.

Duration: 5 weeks
Delivery: Face-to-face classroom learning
Days: Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, 9:30am–2:30pm
Support: One-to-one tutor support and a computer provided

Am I Eligible?

Eligibility criteria apply to our funded Short Courses. Depending on the course, requirements vary slightly.

You must:

  • Be aged 19+
  • Be unemployed
  • Live in Rochdale, Oldham or Bury
  • Be committed to completing the full course
  • Not currently be enrolled on another funded course

Teaching Assistant, Customer Service and MIG Welding: You must not have previously completed a Level 2 qualification or above in the same field.

Digital Skills: You must have lived in the UK for 3+ years.

Eligibility will be checked before you are offered a place.
