Career

I left school in 2005 and enrolled at College where I began my studies in Electrical Installation. After completing my Apprenticeship and qualifying with my Level 2, 3 and 17th Edition, I went in to full-time employment carrying out a variety of Electrical jobs. 15 years later, after seeing an advert on the Rochdale Online website, I decided to take on the challenge of teaching Electrical Installation and Maintenance. I have worked with Rochdale Training (RTA) for 11 months and secured a full-time Electrical Tutor position.

First 6 months

During my first 6 months at RTA I was given lots of support from managers and senior members of staff, I was also given plenty of time to work on my lesson plans. I received very good advice and support along the way regarding the qualifications and student support. It is comforting to know that I have a lot of colleagues around me who are more than happy to help and assist. Since starting my role at RTA, I have successfully completed various courses and qualifications including my 18th Edition Wiring Regulations. I have found that the learning environment is organised and as a result, my students are polite, respectful, well-mannered and keen to learn.

Best Bits

I find that teaching is extremely rewarding, watching a student enter a classroom with no Electrical knowledge and very little confidence who will become a confident young adult with the competence to carry out Electrical tasks and follow diagrams to complete working circuits. This gives me a sense of achievement as a tutor.

Challenges

I would say that the biggest challenge in my job role is adapting to the student's needs, all students learn in different ways and it’s finding that connection to achieve the best results for them. Even though this is challenging at the time, it is more rewarding when the students start to learn new skills and become more confident.

Decide to move into teaching

After working as an Electrician ‘on the tools’ for 15 years and always having the passion to work with young adults, this job opportunity was the perfect next step to change my day-to-day routine but still incorporate my Electrical background.

Recommend to others

I would highly recommend a job role at RTA to the right candidate, the staff are very welcoming and supportive, and it’s also very rewarding to watch your students go through a journey and come out on the other side with new skills, knowledge and confidence.
