The Home of Apprenticeships

An inspiring skills initiative is helping shape Rochdale’s future apprentices as the M&G Skills for Life programme returns for its third year during National Apprenticeship Week 2026.

The programme, delivered by national education charity The Talent Foundry and funded by M&G plc, brought together over 30 students from seven Rochdale secondary schools including Wardle Academy Students, St Cuthberts RC High School, Hollingworth Academy, Newhouse Academy, Cardinal Langley, Kingsway Park and Oulder Hill Leadership Academy.

The session – the third of four workshops in this year’s programme – was supported by 7 volunteers from local businesses,  giving students valuable insight into different industries and career journeys within their own community. Through the programme, students take part in workshops designed to deepen their understanding of local career routes and strengthen key workplace skills.

During the workshop at Rochdale Training, students took part in team-building activities, explored their personal goals and strengths, and gained hands-on experience in Rochdale Training’s engineering facilities alongside current apprentices.

Rachel Yates, Chief Executive Designate at Rochdale Training, said:

“We’re proud to support this programme for a third year and to welcome local students into our training centre during National Apprenticeship Week.

Career pathways aren’t always clear to young people, so giving them practical, hands-on experiences alongside employer insight is incredibly powerful. We hope this experience inspires some of them to consider apprenticeships as a real and exciting next step.”

Jenni Anderson, CEO at The Talent Foundry, added:

“We’re delighted to continue working with M&G plc and Rochdale employers to create meaningful opportunities for young people. Programmes like Skills for Life help students build confidence, develop essential skills and broaden their horizons.”

Local businesses supporting this project today through volunteering include: H Bell & Sons, First Bus, Go North West, Bayman Atkinson Smythe Ltd, and Rochdale Council. Thank you to everyone who took the time to get involved.
