Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are all about learning on the job – combining valuable experience gained from actually doing the job with focused and relevant study. And the good thing is, this training is often subsided by the government so the employer gets better-qualified staff free of charge and the apprentice gets paid while they’re studying.

An Apprenticeship is made up of 3 elements:

Technical Certificate

These are mainly classroom-based awards, generally taken on a day-release basis, which help the apprentice really get to grips with the skills and knowledge they need to really get ahead in their profession.

National Vocational Qualification (NVQ)

Passing an NVQ, and the technical certificate, proves that the apprentice can put into practice in a work environment the skills and knowledge they’ve learnt.

Key Skills Award

These help the apprentice to develop 2 - 6 vital skills they’ll need in employment: communication, application of number, information technology, problem solving, working with others and improving their own learning.


Apprenticeships are available at two levels: Apprenticeship and Advanced Apprenticeship. At Apprenticeship level, the Technical Certificate and NVQ are at level 2. At Advanced level, the apprentice works towards level 3 awards.
